The Story Behind These Two Beach-Style Cover-Ups

The Story Behind These Two Beach Cover-Ups

I met Elizabeth through a Facebook group we both belong to, led by our crochet coach, Pam Grice of Crochetpreneur.

Elizabeth had posted in the group and included her location, which happened to be Pensacola. When I saw it, I initially thought she was just visiting. I responded to her message, curious if there was a crochet event happening in Pensacola that I wasn't aware of. To my surprise, she messaged back and said she actually lived here.

I was beyond excited, and we promised to meet up. A few weeks went by before Elizabeth reached out to schedule a meeting. We finally made plans to meet and get to know each other. During our first meeting, we agreed to collaborate on a project, though we did not decide what it would be.

At our second meeting, we agreed to create a beach cover-up since we live on the beach and planned to release the project in the summer, making it the perfect seasonal item. We also decided to offer two different styles to give everyone an option to choose their favorite look. We used the same yarn, same stitch, and main color to maintain a cohesive connection between our projects. The only thing different as far as the material is concerned is our accent colors.

I am so happy we did this and came up with these two different beach cover-up designs. They are perfect for beachgoers who want to bask in the sun, take an evening stroll along the shore, or relax by the poolside.

This is my first CAL, and I am beyond excited to share it with the amazing Elizabeth "Biz" Fisher-Mareno, a fellow Pensacolian.

Yarn

We decided to use Lion Brand Truboo for our crochet beach cover-ups. Neither of us had used this yarn before, but we were drawn to its wide selection of colors, allowing us to choose any color we wanted. Since this was a summer project, we also wanted a lighter-weight yarn. We preferred a cotton or bamboo blend and ultimately chose bamboo.

In hindsight, this choice had its challenges. The yarn tended to split with almost every stitch, which made the process more difficult. While the final product is soft and gentle on the skin, the splitting was a bit frustrating.

If you’ve used this yarn and love it or have extra time, you can certainly use it, but be prepared for a longer process compared to using standard yarn. If you’d rather avoid these issues, any DK or weight 3 cotton/bamboo blend yarn will work. For example, I used Lion Brand 24/7 DK yarn for the Summer Crochet Beach Sun Hat that matches this beach cover-up and loved it – no splitting at all. Check out the free sun hat pattern on my blog
