How to Crochet A Baby Blanket – Deanna’s Chunky Blanket

Have you ever wondered how to crochet a baby blanket that’s soft, luxurious, and perfect for beginners? This pattern introduction will guide you through everything you need to know before getting started. This crochet blanket pattern with chunky yarn uses the incredibly plush Bernat Baby Blanket yarn, making it ideal for quick projects, baby shower gifts, and timeless keepsakes. Whether you’re a new crocheter or an experienced maker looking for a relaxing project, this pattern is worked with just single crochet (sc) and front post single crochet (fpsc) stitches—simple techniques that create a rich and beautifully textured design.

Why This Chunky Baby Blanket Is Perfect for Beginners

When learning how to crochet a baby blanket, the first thing beginners want is a project that works up quickly and doesn’t require complicated stitch patterns. This design checks all the boxes. The combination of sc and fpsc creates a subtle ribbed texture that looks intricate without adding difficulty. Using Bernat Baby Blanket yarn makes it even more enjoyable—the yarn is ultra-soft, glides easily on the hook, and creates a warm blanket with fewer stitches compared to thinner yarns.

This blanket is worked flat in rows, giving you the comfort of a simple, repeatable process. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by patterns with multiple stitch combinations, you’ll appreciate how approachable this one is. Because the stitches are basic, you can focus on maintaining an even tension, enjoying the rhythm of your work, and watching a beautifully squishy blanket appear row by row.

Benefits of Using Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn

For anyone researching how to crochet a baby blanket, yarn choice is one of the most important factors. Bernat Baby Blanket yarn is a superstar for baby projects due to its softness, durability, and thickness. It’s made with chenille-style fibers that feel gentle against delicate baby skin, and it’s Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it’s safe for little ones.

Another advantage of using chunky yarn is speed. You’ll finish the blanket much faster than with finer yarn weights, making it perfect for last-minute gifts. The bulky stitches also highlight the raised texture created by the fpsc stitches, giving the blanket a rich, cozy look that parents love.

This yarn is also machine-washable and dryable, which is essential for everyday baby items. New parents will appreciate the ease of care, and you’ll appreciate how beautifully the yarn holds up, even after multiple washes.

A Modern, Textured Look with Simple Stitches

This blanket is part of Although this crochet blanket pattern with chunky yarn uses only sc and fpsc, the result is a modern, high-end texture. The fpsc stitches wrap around the post of the stitch from the previous row, creating gentle vertical ridges. These ridges give the blanket dimension while keeping the fabric thick and warm.

If you’ve never used a front post stitch before, don’t worry—this pattern introduction prepares you for success. The technique is easy to learn and adds just enough interest to keep the project engaging. Many crocheters find that once they’ve tried fpsc, it becomes one of their favorite stitches for creating texture.

The pattern is easy to follow and can be completed in a short amount of time, which means you can make several pairs in an afternoon.

    Why Crochet for Preemies?

Crocheting for preemies is a meaningful way to use creativity and skill to bring comfort to families. Preemies often need extra warmth, and handmade items like crochet baby booties, hats, blankets, and garments can help provide that while also offering reassurance to parents during a stressful time.

Handmade booties are not only functional but also symbolic of care and support. Families often keep these small items as keepsakes long after their child has grown, remembering the kindness of strangers who contributed something handmade during their journey.

    Baby Velvet Crochet Blanket

Brown and cream velvet baby blanket on a chair

Making something special is always a rewarding experience, and this new crochet pattern is no exception. Designed with love and care, the Easy Crochet Baby Velvet Blanket is a perfect addition to any nursery. This pattern offers an array of sizes, from a comforting lovey to a generously sized crib blanket, making it versatile for every baby’s needs.

    The Inspiration Behind the Design

When a project begins as a heartfelt request, it often becomes something truly special. This baby velvet blanket was born out of love—literally. My son and daughter-in-law gave me a simple wish: a soft, snuggly blanket for their new nephew. They envisioned something warm and timeless, something that could be treasured from the first days in a bassinet to cozy naps in a crib.

And just like that, the idea took shape.

This pattern brings together everything I adore in a baby blanket: texture, comfort, and a touch of elegance. Made using plush velvet yarn, the blanket features gentle stripes in two contrasting colors, adding depth and visual interest without being overwhelming. The moss stitch—a personal favorite for its subtle texture and stretch—creates a gentle, woven look that feels just right against a baby’s delicate skin.

     Why Moss Stitch?

The moss stitch, also known as the linen stitch, has long been a go-to for baby projects. Its balanced structure means the fabric lays flat, holds its shape, and showcases stripes beautifully. Plus, it’s wonderfully meditative to work—perfect for stitching in peace while thinking of the little one who’ll soon be wrapped in it.

    Sizes That Grow With Baby

One of the best things about the “Easy Crochet Baby Velvet Blanket” pattern is its versatility. It includes instructions for multiple sizes,

    • Lovey – A small, portable comfort blanket that’s perfect for tiny hands to hold and snuggle.
    • Stroller – Ideal for bundling up on brisk walks.
    • Receiving – Just right for swaddling and gifting.
    • Crib – A larger size for growing little ones to enjoy well into toddlerhood.

    About the Yarn

Choosing the right yarn is essential for achieving the desired plushness and warmth. Opt for quality velvet yarn in two contrasting colors that complement each other. The results will be stunning, and the texture will ensure that the blanket becomes a cherished item for years to come.

For this blanket, I opted to use Bernat Velvet yarn which turned out to be perfect. The blanket is soft, plush, and cozy, perfect for the little one.

Comparable yarns to Bernat Velvet yarn, if unavailable are among others Premier Yarns Retro Velvet, YarnArt Chenille, Baby Bee Adore-a-Ball, Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth, and Rico Design Creative Chenillove

Working with velvet yarn adds an extra layer of luxury to any blanket. The plush texture is simply irresistible, making it a truly special gift. While velvet yarn can sometimes be a little different to work with, the moss stitch is a forgiving pattern that allows the inherent beauty of the yarn to shine.

What you can expect from the pattern:

    • Clear and concise written instructions.
    • Sizing for lovey, stroller, receiving, and crib blankets.
    • Guidance on yarn selection, specifically for working with velvet yarn.
    • Tips for achieving neat color changes in the moss stitch.
    • A finished project that is both beautiful and incredibly soft to the touch

This kids’ crochet cardigan is a timeless addition to any child’s wardrobe. It features a relaxed fit and delightful textured details that make it both comfortable and fashionable. Imagine the joy on your little one’s face as they slip into this cozy crochet cardigan, perfect for layering over dresses, pairing with jeans, or throwing on for chilly evenings at home. The Design

The Girls’ Crochet Cardigan features a simple yet versatile design suitable for all occasions. Its relaxed fit allows little ones to move, play, and stay comfortable while keeping warm. The cardigan incorporates thoughtful design elements, such as textured stitches and ribbed cuffs, which give it a stylish yet practical garment.

Whether your child is getting dressed up for a family event, heading to school, playing or just relaxing at home, this cardigan is the ideal layering piece. It adds a cozy touch to any outfit and keeps your child snug in cooler weather.

The beauty of this pattern lies in its customizability—you can easily adapt it by experimenting with yarn colors, adding unique buttons, or even incorporating fun accents like pockets or patches to make the cardigan as unique as the child who will wear it.

Perfect for Crocheters of All Levels

One of the best features of this pattern is its accessibility for crocheters of all skill levels. The step-by-step instructions are clear and easy to follow, whether you’re a beginner trying your hand at something new or an experienced crocheter looking for a simple yet beautiful design. The design is simple yet stylish, making it a perfect project for anyone seeking a practical and stylish addition to a child’s wardrobe.

This cardigan pattern is also great for those who want to practice shaping and working with thicker yarn. The straightforward construction allows for easy modifications, so you can experiment with different details or adjustments to match your personal style preferences. Whether you’re adding a custom touch or keeping it classic, the Girls’ Crochet Cardigan is sure to become a go-to project for kids’ clothing.

The Joy of Handmade Clothing for Kids

There’s something incredibly special about creating handmade garments, especially for children. Each stitch represents time, care, and love, making the finished product much more meaningful than any store-bought piece. Handmade garments often become cherished keepsakes, passed down from one child to the next, or even across generations.

Kids who wear handmade items tend to appreciate the uniqueness of their clothes, as well as the time and effort that went into making them. They also benefit from the comfort and warmth that only a handmade piece can provide. When you crochet a cardigan for a special child in your life, you’re giving them more than just a piece of clothing—you’re gifting them something filled with sentiment and love that can last for years to come.

This cardigan is part of the Awesome Autumn Blog Hop hosted by Melena of Straight Hooked. The event features 30 crochet patterns from different designers, with a new pattern unveiled daily. There is a mix of patterns, with some patterns offered for free while others are 50% off.

    Yarn

Yarn Choice :Why Use Weight 5 Yarn?

For this project, I chose weight 5 yarn, also known as bulky yarn. Why bulky yarn? It’s the perfect combination of warmth, comfort, and speed. If you’re like me and enjoy seeing your projects come together quickly, you’ll appreciate how fast this cardigan takes shape. Chunky yarn works up much faster than lighter-weight yarns, making it ideal for those who want to create something beautiful in a shorter amount of time.

Weight 5 yarn is also soft and plush, providing the kind of coziness we all look for in a cardigan, especially in cooler weather. It holds its shape well, ensuring that the cardigan maintains its structure without feeling stiff. Additionally, this yarn adds beautiful texture to your stitches, making the cardigan functional and visually appealing.

    IMG 5936

Choosing this type of yarn means you’re creating a durable, long-lasting garment that will stay looking great through countless wears and washes. Plus, the tactile feel of the chunky yarn adds an extra level of comfort that kids will love.

    Yarn Substitution

This cardigan uses Premier Bloom Chunky Big Self-Striping Floral Print Yarn.

If you can’t find this yarn, use your favorite weight 5 yarn. The best alternatives to this yarn, include Premier Yarns Canyon Colors, Lion Brand Mandala Expressions, Hobbii Amigo Chunky, Loops & Threads Charisma, or Bernat Softee Chunky.

    Crochet Children Construction

This cardigan is made by constructing individual pieces that are sewn together at the end. The five main components are the back panel, two front panels, and two sleeves. Once these pieces are completed, they are sewn together to form the cardigan. After assembly, the front ribbing and lower ribbing are crocheted directly onto the cardigan for a polished, finished look.

    Step-by-Step Construction

    1. Back Panel
Begin by crocheting the back panel. This will be the largest piece and provide the main structure of the cardigan. The panel is worked from the bottom up, Once complete, fasten off and set the piece aside.

    2. Front Panels (Left and Right)
The front panels are worked separately, one for each side of the cardigan. Each front panel will be slightly narrower than the back panel and will have the neckline shaping. After finishing both front panels, fasten off and set them aside.

    3. Sleeves (Left and Right)
Next, crochet the two sleeves. Each sleeve is worked in rows, from the cuff upwards toward the shoulder. Once you reach the required length for each sleeve, fasten off and set them aside.

    4. Seaming the Pieces
After you have completed all five main pieces (back panel, front panels, and sleeves), it’s time to assemble the cardigan.

      • First, sew the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders.

      • Next, attach the sleeves to the armholes.

      • Finally, sew the side seams and the underarm seams to complete the body of the cardigan.

    5. Adding the Front Ribbing
Once the cardigan is fully assembled, you will add the front ribbing. Start at the bottom corner of one front panel and work your way up along the front edge, around the neckline, and back down the other front panel. The ribbing is worked in rows using a simple ribbed stitch pattern, such as single crochet or half-double crochet, to create a neat and stretchy edging.

    6. Adding the Lower Ribbing
Finally, crochet the lower ribbing directly onto the bottom edge of the cardigan. This will help give the cardigan a finished look and provide additional structure. Like the front ribbing, the lower ribbing is worked in rows using a ribbed stitch pattern.

    1. Once the ribbing is complete, weave in any remaining ends, and your cardigan is ready!

    Inspiration

Back in the whirlwind days of my children’s early years, I barely remember the chaos of raising three little ones in just three and a half years or four children in five years. Between diaper changes, feedings, and constantly watching them, sitting down to create intricate crochet patterns seemed like an impossible luxury. It was a cycle of one child napping while another was wide awake, and their relentless energy kept me on my toes.

In those moments, the value of patterns that were visually appealing but also quick and easy to make became evident. The reality of being a mom on the go meant that I needed easy crochet patterns that would fit into my daily rhythm of childcare. There was no luxury of extended periods to dedicate to intricate projects. Instead, the key was to have something on hand that could be picked up and put down without losing the thread of creativity.

    Crochet Chunky Lilac blanket

The beauty of this approach lies in its accessibility to a busy lifestyle, acknowledging the constant juggling in our lives. The philosophy is simple – just because life is a whirlwind of activities doesn’t mean you can’t infuse it with creativity and beauty. It’s about finding that sweet spot where the joy of crafting aligns with the demands of a bustling lifestyle.

For those who resonate with this sentiment – whether you’re a busy mom with small children or someone who simply loves crafting without the fuss – the answer lies in patterns like the easy chunky baby crochet blanket. This particular design is tailored to fit into a busy lifestyle, offering a blend of simplicity, speed, and visual delight.

    super bulky crochet baby blanket

What makes this pattern stand out is the use of bulky yarn. Beyond its obvious contribution to the blanket’s warmth and coziness, this choice of material significantly accelerates the entire crochet process. It’s a game-changer for those familiar with the feeling of starting a crochet project, only to realize hours have passed in what feels like mere moments.

The secret of this pattern lies in its simplicity. It shows that elegance and beauty can emerge from the most straightforward of designs. The chunky texture of the yarn adds a tactile richness to the finished product and also ensures that progress is swift and satisfying. This is especially important during those stolen moments of creativity in the middle of a hectic day – every stitch counts. It’s a reminder that, even in the busiest seasons of life, there is space for personal fulfillment and artistic expression.

    Pancreatic Cancer

I chose the purple color in support of patients with pancreatic cancer.

Today, I’m so excited to share something special with you all. As part of the Crochet Cancer Challenge, hosted by Christine of Sweet Potato 3. I’ve designed a purple hat to honor a dear church member we lost to pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is a tough battle, and I am joining the fight by creating this beautiful purple hat. Purple represents awareness for pancreatic cancer, and my goal is to spread the word and make a difference.

My new crochet pattern is simple, cozy, and perfect for anyone. You won’t believe how easy it is to make, even if you’re a beginner! The best part? Every hat you create can make someone’s day a little brighter.

    The Design

“The Story Behind the Purple Hat – A Tribute to Our Loved One”

I wanted to share a little more about why I chose to design a purple hat for the Crochet Cancer Challenge. This project is close to my heart, and it’s all in memory of a beloved church member who fought a brave battle against pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is a silent killer, often diagnosed at later stages, making it challenging to treat. This is exactly what happened to Jade. She had been having vague abdominal pain, back pain and bloating. Before we knew it she started losing weight. At first, we thought she had decided to shade off a few pounds.

Talking to her one day after church, she said her symptoms were worsening, and the doctors had done numerous tests with no definitive answer. She said the next step was to open her abdomen and explore to see what was causing her symptoms.

They did surgery and took some samples for biopsy, which revealed that she had pancreatic cancer. The cancer had spread so much and done a lot of damage to her organs. She was given 3 weeks to live.

This was a shock to all of us. Apart from complaining here and there of the vague abdominal issue, she had been active all through. Jade lived for six months after the diagnosis and passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.

This purple hat is a way to shine a light on this disease and support those affected by it.

I carefully selected the shade of purple for this hat, as it symbolizes hope, awareness, and compassion. When you create and wear this hat, you’re not just making a fashion statement; you’re sharing a message of support and love.

Together, we can make a real difference. Let’s crochet for a cause and remember Jade through every stitch.

    Yarn

I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-pilling Yarn 100% Acrylic, a worsted weight yarn. As I was preparing to crochet this hat, I knew that I wanted the hat to be soft and cozy on the skin. Something that will add comfort to cancer patients. Since I have used this yarn before, I knew it would be the best choice for this pattern. Even better, it is anti-pilling since I don’t like it when I make a beautiful product and after a few washes, it starts pilling.

The yarn is thick and warm enough for cancer patients to wear during chemo treatment or cover their heads for warmth especially if they lost their hair.

If unable to find this yarn, the following yarns will be an excellent alternative: Premier Ever Soft, Lion Brand Schitts Creek, Cascade Yarns Anthem, Caron Simply Soft, and Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek.

Looking for a free easy crochet baby bib pattern? If yes, then try this simple and quick bib pattern. The pattern works out fast and all you will need to know is how to double crochet, half double crochet, and single crochet. The only technique required is to know how to double crochet in the back loop only and front loop only.

I love to crochet baby stuff even more so, after having grandbabies. Nothing excites me more than when I crochet for them or someone asks me to crochet for their unborn or born baby. Even better, my granddaughters are older now and therefore they ask me specifically what they want me to make for them. I love it because I am sure they are more to use what they ask for.

Well, this is my first baby bib to make. I have designed and crocheted things for babies and older kids but never a baby bib. Not until a friend asked me to make this baby bib for her. I am glad she did because then I got a chance to make my first baby bib.

Designing and crocheting this baby bib was easy. This is because my friend knew specifically what she wanted. She described it to me and after several drawings, she was satisfied with this pattern.

She also knew that she wanted purple color, which is her husband’s favorite color. He is an LSU fan and alumnus and so he chose the color for his son. I decided to make the pink one as I really enjoyed making it.

After I finished, I decided that I wanted to share my first crochet bib pattern with as many people as possible. What other way to accomplish that than being part of the Baby Shower Blog Hop? This blog hop is hosted by Kristine Mullen of Ambassador Crochet.

    Inspiration

There is no a happy time than when you are looking forward to welcoming a new baby into the family. I remember when I was expecting my children I looked forward to their arrival and had so many ideas on what I wanted to make for them. I obviously did not know whether the baby would be a girl or a boy until they were born, so most often made unisex projects.

For my grandchildren, it has been different since I knew whether i was going to have a boy or a girl. I therefore crocheted for them specifically. Personally I like the idea of unisex unless i am making for a specific baby. A unisex crochet pattern gives both the boy or girl the opportunity to enjoy a any pattern. That is why I decided to crochet a unisex beanie hat. the only thing you have to do is change the color for a specific baby.

I had fun making this hat. It is a quick and easy pattern using only basic stitches of single and double crochet. This hat

There is never a more fulfilling time than when you make things for your family. now that I have grandchildren I never run out of ideas of what I need to make. Making this headband was fun. I decided lace headband for all of my grandchildren since it is summer. I wanted something that will be comfortable for warm weather. These lace headbands with a flower turned to be perfect.

Get the free pattern below or purchase the ad-free PDF version of this pattern on Etsy and Ravelry. The PDF is designed for printing and this way you can support me! And don’t forget to PIN IT on your Pinterest board.
