Let’s talk about the criss cross stitch as this is what defines and sets this hat from the rest. The criss cross stitch creates a beautiful twisted and textured effect, which adds depth and visual effect to your hat. Don’t worry if you are new to crocheting or have never crocheted a twisted stitch. This pattern is designed with beginner and advanced crocheters in mind. It will guide and walk you through step and step until you finish the hat.

‍Special Abbreviations

Criss Cross Stitch: (ccs)- sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, 1 dc in sc just skipped. This creates a crossed or twisted pair of dc sts.

Criss Cross stitch decrease (ccsdec)– sk 1 ccs (or 2 sc), dc decrease in next ccs (or 2 sc), dc decrease in ccs (or 2 sc) just skipped. The first ccdec row is worked into sc from the prior row so count 2 sc for each ccs, as noted in parentheses

‍Notes

  • The hat is made from the bottom up starting with the band, which is worked in rows and joined together with a sl st.

  • The body of the hat is worked in rounds to the top of the hat.

  • Chs at the beginning of the rounds do not count as a stitch throughout.

  • Rounds are joined to the first ch 3 of the round with a sl st.

  • The stitches are decreased at the top before the hat is tightened and sewn together with a tapestry needle.

  • You can put a pompom if you like.
