Easy free crochet coaster

Have you ever needed a quick handmade gift but weren’t sure what to make? I know I have! While larger crochet projects like blankets, sweaters, and cardigans are wonderful to make, sometimes I enjoy working on smaller projects like easy round crochet coaster that can be completed without a big time commitment.

Why an easy crochet round crochet coasters. They are practical, require very little yarn, and are easy to personalize with different colors to suit any season or occasion.

Today, I am sharing my crochet round coaster pattern as part of the Giftstravaganza Blog Hop. This week’s featured category is Gifts for the Home, and I thought a set of Christmas-inspired coasters would be a lovely addition.

I chose red and white for this design because these colors are a classic combination for Christmas. They bring a festive feel to the home and look beautiful when placed on a coffee table or used during holiday gatherings.

One thing I appreciate about handmade home accessories is that they don’t have to be complicated to be useful. A simple coaster can protect furniture from drink spills and condensation while adding a little personality to a room.

These crochet placemats are also great for gift-giving. Make several and tie them together with a ribbon for a simple presentation. You could also include them in a Christmas gift basket with a favorite mug, tea, or coffee. They are suitable for teachers, coworkers, neighbors, friends, and anyone who appreciates handmade items.

Another reason this project is worth adding to your crochet list is that it is a wonderful stash-buster. If you have small amounts of cotton yarn left over from previous projects, this is a great way to put them to good use.

This easy crochet round coaster is part of the 2026 Giftstravaganza where different designers are sharing their creation. You will get a new free PDF pattern everyday. To get more updates, see below.

Choosing Yarn for Your Crochet Round Coaster

For my Christmas coaster, I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, a medium-weight Category 4 yarn made from 100% cotton.

I chose cotton because it is a good fiber for everyday household items. It is durable, absorbent, and holds up well with regular use. Cotton also gives crochet projects a nice stitch definition, helping the finished coaster maintain its shape. The combination of red and white gives this coaster its Christmas look, but you can easily change the colors to match your home decor or make coasters for other occasions.

Yarn Substitutes

You don’t have to use the exact yarn I used. There are several other cotton yarns that will work nicely for this crochet coaster.

Here are some alternatives to consider:

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK: A lighter-weight option from the same yarn family. Keep in mind that using DK weight may produce a smaller or thinner coaster.
  • Lily Sugar’n Cream: A popular 100% cotton worsted-weight yarn that is a great option for crochet kitchen and home accessories.
  • Bernat Handicrafter Cotton: A medium-weight cotton yarn that comes in many colors, making it easy to find suitable Christmas shades.
  • Peaches & Creme Original: A worsted-weight cotton yarn that works well for practical household crochet projects.
  • Knit Picks Dishie: A durable 100% cotton worsted-weight yarn suitable for coasters and other home accessories.

For the closest match to my original project, I recommend choosing a medium-weight (Category 4) 100% cotton yarn. If you substitute with a different yarn, remember that your finished coaster may vary slightly in size.

Make a Set for Christmas Gift-Giving

Red and white crochet coaster set styled for a festive holiday table, an easy round crochet placemat inspiration.

One coaster is lovely, but a set makes an even better gift! You can make four or six matching coasters and package them together with a ribbon or place them in a small gift box.

You can also experiment with different color combinations. Try red and white for Christmas, green and white for a fresh holiday look, or neutral shades for coasters that can be used throughout the year.

I hope you enjoy making this little project as much as I enjoyed designing it. Don’t forget to explore the other Giftstravaganza Blog Hop patterns for more handmade gift inspiration!

A quick publishing note: Both introductions use the keyword crochet Christmas coaster pattern naturally, with related terms such as crochet round coaster, handmade Christmas gifts, cotton crochet coaster, and crochet home decor.

I have also included cotton yarn alternatives in both posts. One small distinction: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is a worsted-weight Category 4 yarn, so I recommend matching the weight as closely as possible when substituting.
